Sweat seemed to struggle out of him. Limbs felt dry, flesh heavy with its desiccated weight. No water to help it spring and bounce. Didn't matter how much he had drank since the armor was peeled off. Mouth sticky. Tongue like a brick.
Still he growled at the fear that met him. A thing low in his throat.
Might be, if he didn't feel so much like kindling, he would work through it. Offer a smile. Some word of reassurance. All he had in him was ash there in the now.
"Saw some fucker skulking in the back," Edwynna confided in the Half Ear. "Looked, too pointed to be one of these lot," she wiped the blood off her hand, and looked down at the terrified man who pressed himself into the dirt. Smacked his belly, just below the gash that had been sown shut. "You stop yer damn squirming," the paled flesh still reddened from the slap.
Edwynna smirked. Looked to the boy who had given his words to the moment. His hopes. "You keep the Dragon safe, boy," she told him. Looked across the room to the two youths who had been all but squired in all the chaos. "Winry, Jessop, with me," she said as she got up and moved. "We got a skulky fucker to get after," she grabbed up her bow, and handed them some of the dead men's steel that had been picked up. "You two stay close on me, don't so much as fart without my say so,"
The young man and young woman blinked at each other.
"Let's go!" Edwynna barked from the outside.
Hector cleaned the stitched area once more. Applied an ointment of beeswax, honey, and yarrow oils, with hands cleaned with soap and water.
He didn't say anything in regards to the goats.
When the lull came, and the villagers went on with their fearmongering, Hector felt the hiss and crackle there at the pit of his gut. A thing as acrid as the lingering scent of burnt home, and flesh.
"You lot shut your damn mouths," he hissed. His eyes on a half burned child he tended to. A naked knife in his hand. "That knight risked her life for you, rode out against the bandits alone," he ran his finger along the knife's edge. Drew blood, with teeth bared in hiss. "Pulled the kid out of the burning house,"
It almost seemed to smoke in his eyes, as it eked out of the fresh wound. Dripped into a smaller clam shell where he had mixed ointments into. Fed the concoction a moment longer.
"If you've anything to fear, it is me, and me alone," he laughed bitterly. Nod to the boy who had stuck with him so far. "Bandage," he instructed. Did not wait to mix the ointments with his blood. Fingers working a stick of cedar into what soon turned to pink paste.
Words of power whispered under his breath, sounds like the scent of warm oils. The Cedar stick caught flame in his hand. And he stared at it a long while as it burned at the wrong end. Still between his fingers, he showed teeth in strange and tired smile. "And who will kill a dragon, if not a knight?" he turned the stick over, and plunged it into the mix with a hiss and a spit. The fresh made cedar ash mixed there too. And he stirred.
Dipped his fingers to it, and painted the child's wounds there with forefinger and middle. A mixture imbued with his own life's shroud. Stave off infection, aid healing. Though he would feel her pain as it set. And his teeth came to clamp as he went on with the work.
