Mako sat in a chair plush for its wear, ankle over knee. A wrinkled map rested on the table before him, held down by emptied bottles that reeked of day spoiled wine and cider. Wrought of thin linen, ink sun-faded, it lent an appearance of undeserved age. Medleys of glass and pottery presided him.
"You know," he said, knowing he was drinking, knowing that the words tumbled from lips like frenetic bees, and caring not at all. "Sometimes—often, I think my mother must have been a noblewoman of Seax, some great mistress. Too important to abandon home and hearth for the flotilla, for, me."
He was rambling. To himself, to another. It mattered little. He wiped a heavy palm over his brow, dragged fingers hard over cheeks. Loosed a breath held a bottle past its prime.
"My funds take me no further. The last of it goes to you, the last job I can afford. You'll find it in the top drawer."
A shrug.
"Tomorrow, I suppose, we'll be done with each other. Unless you bring happier news. What say the captain of my proposal? A thousand bundles of figurative grain on promissory lean."
He plucked the corners of his map up from the table, taking care not to disturb the bevy of bottles.
