Where the wind blew through the trees and the leaves rustled and rattled against the branches, Josai walked. Winged spear firm in one hand, as charms of bone, obsidian, and silver rattled against red cedar haft with the drop and stretch of each of her steps. The tool's butt-end thunk, thunked along the forest floor as the blue robed witch strode across the woodland way.
"It would seem," she intoned to no soul in particular. Her strides come still. "The anymphaeus spores have been successful in this cut of the balewood," she scanned about the clearing. There between tall spruce, and proud sequoia, where the soil smelled of earth, and the bark upon the trees cracked and shone in its natural luster. "It would even seem that some of the old sentinels have recovered from their bouts of blight," she let her fingers run down along the bumps and crags of the old growth. Felt the firm give of all its natural armor. Just there beyond her skin.
She moved down, let one hand slide down the spear's length as each fetish sounded against the wood of her spear. One knee to the earth, she rest her spear against the great tree she knelt beside, and slung off her pack. Set it down before her with its solid thump. Her hands sifted through the compartments of the ash wood box. Pulled the tab of a brass latch. Up, flicked down the ring that kept it shut tight. Opened the compartment.
Vials snugged in suede molds. Pulled one free. Uncorked it. Dug her fingers into the soil and scooped up the earth's skin. Ran her pads over the granules and clumps of detritus and soft moist earth. Looked there, where moss, roots, and mushroom veins liked to spread. Let the sample fall from her hand. Pressed her fingers there where she'd peeled back the mantle of the forest. Felt it. As if she checked for the forest's pulse. Her touch, a drop of water against the surface of that world. Ripples rolling out from the epicenter that was where she knelt.
Not ten yards north and east of her, twisted brambles of the balewood ran slick with the tar like growth of the blight. Branches and vines that gleamed like onyx and glass. Pustules and leaves that bloomed in violent yellows and greens that seemed to swear vengeance. While coats of reds rusted over slumped boughs and broken trunks.
A place caught between life, and all the shattered promise it held.
Still. Josai worked. Calm beneath the shade of her wide brimmed hat.
