The Vagrant

“Be careful in the company of monsters that you don’t become one.”

Brief History

The man who would eventually become a notorious killer was born in the earliest days of Altalusia, in a small coastal settlement known as Bellemare, a rough, lively town of fishermen, sailors, trappers, and riverfolk nestled among the marshes where the waterways eventually spilled into the sea. Born mortal, he grew up with the salt of the coast in his blood and learned early how to survive by his wits, his hands, and a healthy disregard for authority. He came of age while Altalusia itself was still being shaped beneath the First King's rule, watching settlers gather beneath the newly raised Blade Tower and the kingdom slowly transform from scattered communities into something resembling a nation.

His mortal life was unremarkable enough at first. He became a sailor and wanderer, spending years moving between Bellemare and the growing coastal settlements, earning coin however he could and developing the irreverent charm that would remain with him long after his humanity was gone. Somewhere in those early centuries, however, his life ended and another began. He was turned into a vampire, though he has never spoken openly of the one responsible. Whatever horror accompanied his transformation eventually gave way to an intoxicating freedom. Mortality no longer bound him. He could cross distances in moments, survive wounds that should have killed him, and exert a strength no human could hope to match. But with immortality came hunger, and eventually the hunger became something he embraced.

It was during this period that the man he had once been began to disappear. Bodies started turning up along the roads, in alleys, beside the docks, and in the lonely places between settlements. The killings were brutal, deliberate, and strangely inconsistent, making them difficult to attribute to any ordinary murderer. Some victims appeared almost completely drained of blood; others bore wounds that suggested something far stronger than a human hand had torn them apart. The killer seemed to have no preference for station or circumstance. Fishermen, merchants, travelers, nobles, criminals—anyone could become prey. Rumors spread faster than the authorities could suppress them, and before long, people began whispering about a monster stalking the kingdom. No one knew his true name. No one knew where he lived. Some swore he was a madman, others a demon, while a few of the oldest and most superstitious whispered that the killer was something that had been walking the world since before their grandparents' grandparents were born.

Eventually, the killings became so notorious that the murderer acquired a name of his own: The Vagrant. It was never a name he chose for himself. It was given to him by frightened people trying to make sense of a killer who seemed to belong nowhere and yet could appear anywhere. The name stuck, and over the centuries it became inseparable from the legend. The Vagrant vanished for years at a time, only to resurface somewhere else and leave another trail of bodies behind him. By then, he had become less a man than a ghost story—a name whispered in taverns, muttered by sailors, and used to frighten children away from wandering the roads after dark.

And while Altalusia changed around him, The Vagrant endured. He witnessed the death of the First King, the rise of Victorian til Altusan, the War of the Ten Penny Barons, and Queen Alexandria's campaign to restore the kingdom through bloodshed. He watched White Port rise at the mouth of Unicorn Bay and later witnessed the horrors of the Dead Wave as northland raids and blighted creatures devastated the eastern coast. Kingdoms changed, rulers died, towns grew into cities, and generations of people lived and vanished without ever realizing that the monster from their oldest stories was still walking among them.

Today, more than a millennium after his birth, The Vagrant remains a wandering relic of Altalusia's earliest age. He rarely speaks of his mortal life, and fewer still have ever heard the name he was born with. To the modern world, The Vagrant is the name that survived. The infamous killer became a myth, the myth became a legend, and the legend eventually became the man himself. Whether he still kills for the same reasons he once did is difficult to say. Perhaps the hunger remains. Perhaps the centuries have simply made murder boring. Whatever the truth, the old monster has never truly disappeared. He merely wanders, smiles, feeds, and waits—an ancient predator hiding beneath the guise of a carefree traveler, carrying a history of blood that stretches back almost as far as Altalusia itself.

He is a tall, leanly muscular man with a wiry, predatory build, broad shoulders, and a gaunt, angular face. His unnaturally pale skin contrasts sharply with his thick, messy black hair, which falls around his face and partially obscures his glowing red eyes, their unnatural radiance immediately betraying his vampiric nature. A wide, predatory grin exposes pronounced, razor-sharp fangs, giving his already rugged features an almost feral quality. He wears a weathered dark coat with a high, red-lined collar over layers of worn clothing and leather, with belts, straps, gloves, and other practical details completing his rough, outlaw-like appearance. His hands are long and claw-like, tipped with dark, pointed nails, while his loose, careless posture and ever-present grin convey an unsettling confidence—as though violence is little more than a source of amusement to him.

Personality

The Vagrant possesses the easygoing charm of a wandering rogue, but beneath the humor lies something far older and far more sinister. He is charismatic, irreverent, and fond of teasing those around him, often treating danger with an almost insulting lack of concern. Yet there is an unmistakable hunger beneath his playful demeanor—a constant, predatory awareness that reminds those who spend too long in his presence that they are standing beside a creature that has fed on blood for centuries. He rarely speaks plainly about his past, and when pressed about where he came from or how long he has walked the world, he tends to answer with a smirk, a cryptic remark, or an old story whose truth is impossible to determine. Though he may appear carefree, The Vagrant possesses the patience and perspective of something ancient, watching generations rise and disappear while he remains. His bloodlust is rarely frantic; it is deliberate, almost ritualistic, and frighteningly calm. He can be charming, even protective, toward those he favors, but his affection should never be mistaken for safety. To The Vagrant, friendship is something earned, loyalty something treasured—and blood something that will always, eventually, be owed.

Skills

He possesses the vast and terrifying skillset of an ancient vampire, refined through a millennia of survival, violence, and bloodshed. He possesses superhuman strength, speed, endurance, and reflexes, capable of overwhelming powerful opponents with effortless brutality and moving faster than most can perceive. His body is extraordinarily resilient, allowing him to recover from wounds that would be fatal to any mortal, while his vampiric nature grants him heightened senses and an almost instinctive awareness of his surroundings. He is a formidable hand-to-hand combatant and an experienced killer, equally comfortable fighting with his claws, fangs, or whatever weapon happens to be within reach. More frightening still are the supernatural abilities accumulated over his long existence: regeneration, shapeshifting, manipulation of darkness and blood, summoning monstrous familiars, and the ability to unleash the immense supernatural power contained within his own blood. The Vagrant rarely reveals the full extent of what he can do, however, preferring to fight with a fraction of his strength and leave his enemies wondering whether they have actually witnessed his limits—or merely his amusement.
