"At some point, one must draw a line between duty and family, dear sister. With every passing day, you force me to toe that line."
It is oft stated that being the middle child of a family is a trying position. You receive not the respect of the eldest, nor the pampering of the youngest. Perhaps none know the truth behind such sayings as Erren Tourmalet. Being a son to the unshakeable backbone of the Iron Gate of Mheara brings enough expectations onto oneself without being the younger brother to the current Head of House, a man infamous for his boundless ambition and unruly temper. The idea that one could bring just as much honor to his family name without that lofty title is perhaps farcical, but... well, Erren finds a way.
Since his earliest days, Erren found himself most comfortable in the large shadows cast by his larger-than-life family members. With a revered father, an indomitable mother, and a brother with the spirit of fire, Erren contented himself on being the 'ordinary' one, happy to spend his days in the comfort of The Iron Gate, either buried in his studes or assisting his father with the more menial and monotonous tasks of the House.
What occupied him most was the study of the Shroud, and those who weave it. Magic was a world so far from the Mheara Mountains, so disconnected from a life of managing mines and trade routes that it may as well have been fantasy to him. Nevertheless, he immersed himself in the stories that would come from in from those trade transports that would stay overnight at the Gate. In secret, he began to practice the art of Weaving himself.
Unfortunately, Erren found himself to be pitiful at most all forms of magic, the talent for physically manifesting the Shroud simply not present within him. In his late teens, however, Erren did develop a method of using the shroud to manipulate the properties of chance; the art of Probability. Through this method of magic, one could shift the odds of nearly any event, albeit only to a point. The unlikely result of a scenario would become somewhat more likely, and vice versa. In this school of thought, Erren excelled like no other.
When the time was right, Erren presented his abilities to his father, Dylar. Impressed with his son's efforts and mindful of the benefits such talents could bring if utilized properly, Dylar appointed his most studious of children to the position of ambassador and diplomat between House Tourmalet and the Runefolk they are so closely intertwined with. It proved quickly to be a job at which Erren was perfect for, his humble and down-to-earth nature, compared to the rest of his family, serving him well in building relationships with their partners.
Erren is also notable for being one of the only prominent members of the Tourmalet House to openly acknowledge, and even support his half-sister Lysanne. While not going so far as to toss his hat into her more brazen attempts at power, Erren has never wavered in vocally supporting the public recognition of Lysanne as a Tourmalet, much to the chagrin of the rest of his family. His relationship with his half-sister is somewhat volatile all the same; despite his support, he disapproves of the methods through which she works, and tends to clash with her on ideals. Regardless, he cares for her as a sibling, and more often than not finds himself providing aide when she needs it most.
Appearance
Height 6'0
Build Slim
Hair Black
Eyes Brown
Erren is a middle aged male with dark hair on his head, lip and chin, albeit with grey silvers stubbornly beginning to show through, a sign either age and stress (Erren will insist this is the latter). A slender frame save for broad chest and shoulders, he prefers to clothing rather below his status, opting for comfort over fashion and formality. His usual attire is a dark brown pair of trousers, knee high boots with golden buckles, and deep blue colors on top. The only true mark of his importance within the family is the stunning cloak he wears around his shoulders, bearing the Tourmalet coat of arms on its back.
Personality
Outside of his work, Erren is an outgoing, friendly, and highly educated person. Never having trouble making friends, Tourmalet is well liked by most of his peers. A must, considering his position as an ambassador and diplomat.
Despite his sunny disposition, Erren is extremely serious about his work, and does not take affronts to his assignment lightly. The goofy and aloof attitude he often presents hides a very confident and determined soul underneath.
Erren is deeply analytical, preferring to think carefully about choices before making them. His power of observation is sharpened as a result of this, and he often notices small details that others may easily miss. Coupled with an unusual fascination for statistics, odds, and chance, no choice Erren makes is ever made lightly.

Skills
Erren is a man of many talents. While his official work as the bridge between the Torumalet family and the Runefolk they sell many of their wares too is a testament to his persuasiveness and natural charisma, he is also a student of the Shroud as well, though not so much to be considered a mage.
Though he is unable to wield any particularly powerful magic, Tourmalet's arduous study has earned him the unique ability to slightly shift the odds of any scenario he sees fit, nudging the least likely of outcomes to be more likely, peeking beyound the shroud and tilting the scales in whatever manner suits his needs.
There is, obviously, a stark limit to this. Erren cannot manipulate chance so much as to guarantee any one outcome by any means, and using the ability requires a clear line of sight and deep focus. Most often, Erren uses this talent only to aid him in his diplomatic endeavors, contributing in part to his success in that field.
