Gideon Zayn Hale was born in White Port, his father a fisherman and his mother a seamstress. It relies heavily on trade and fishing for industry and because of this, Gideon was put to work as soon as he was old enough to work an oar and a sail. It taught him an early sense of work ethic and instilled in him a drive to have more. This greed warred deep inside of him with his lust for adventure, a desire to explore the world at large, to experience more than he knew he could ever hope to if he remained at home.
His parents loved him as much as they could, but when siblings Mia, Mason and Sarah arrived it was made clear very quickly to him that he was old enough now to fend for himself. His father hugged him, gave him a kiss on top of his head and encouraged him to look to the port to find work. Tossing his bag containing all that he owned over his shoulder, he took the advice to heart, finding work with one of the fishing boat captains.
One day while out at sea, their fishing vessel was attacked by a pirate vessel. He was taken prisoner and forced to work as a cabin boy for mere scraps. Over time, he earned favor with the captain of the ship, working his way into the hearts of the rest of the crew as well. Eventually, while raiding, they captured a small, single mast ship and he was given command of her and told, 'If you can sail her back to our hideout, she's yours'. Gideon took the challenge in stride and after a few mishaps learning how to work the sails and steer with the rudder, he succeeded. His new pirate family held a lavish party to celebrate their version of a coming of age ceremony.
Over time, his reputation as a pirate blossomed in infamy. He gradually acquired his own crew and eventually, after saving up enough gold, he built his own ship, his pride and joy, the 'Black Queen'. The Black Queen would go on to become infamous on the open seas and the sight of his flag, a skull and crossbones with a pair of daggers, alone evoking quick surrenders. His greed continued to grow and he amassed more and more power, expanding his fleet to five, six, ten ships until he had a veritable armada. He discovered a beautiful, uninhabited island and established Dead Man's Fort, a fortress of renown within the pirate community - a veritable safe haven. Hidden and known only by his most trusted men, it could only be found by one who had been there before and knew the path through the dangerous reefs that guarded the inlet and harbor.
The various conflicts within recent history made it a glorious time to be a pirate and a mercenary, especially with your very own certified navy. Contracted by anyone with coin to sabotage trade or sink rival vessels, he would oftentimes stab both nations in the back, sinking the ships and eliminating the witnesses and sailing off with the plundered goods. His name is now more myth, his story near fable and his feats growing with each telling, some with his own embellishing when he would dock in port under the guise of a merchant selling wares, unbeknownst to them stolen.

Gideon was probably handsome once, though years spent under the unrelenting sun and sea winds have given his skin a sun-kissed weathering. His dark hair flows restless and almost chaotic down to his shoulders, the tips dyed gold and red. A nick runs through his otherwise aquiline nose while a cut runs vertically through his right eye, a well-timed dodge saving him the loss of it, and brow. A pair of hazel-hued eyes observe the world with a hidden mirth above a neatly trimmed beard that frames his chin, save a few long 'tails' woven with multicolored beads.

His body lacks the soft curves of one used to the softer things in life. A large sword-shaped scar runs through his hairless chest and biceps.

Personality
Gideon is as loyal as the depth of your money purse and it more than likely has a hole in it of his doing and he's pocketing the coins that fall out. He's charismatic, jovial and entertaining in the same way of your distant uncle, you enjoy his company one hand and count the fall of sand in an hourglass till he leaves.
His men love him and are loyal in the only manner pirates understand. He cares for them as a makeshift father figure, making sure they eat, pull their weight and don't down drunk.
Fond of the carnal pleasures of women, he's as fleeting a lover as a summer storm, all fierce, fiery passion and gone the next day with the rising of the sun.

- Master navigator/sailor - years spent navigating the seas using the stars has made him an expert sailor and has attuned an innate sense to know when or when not to put out to sea.
- Skilled swordsman/duelist - defending ones life from rival sailors and angry husbands has gifted him an edge with the cutlass, his weapon of choice
- Skilled negotiator/deal-maker - he has a well-earned reputation as a fair dealer when it comes to goods and considers no deal final till a handshake is made
