It was a trudge. Con la tierra llena de agua. And rot. The stink of the bog thick with each pull of lungs pumping for breath. It sank sweet down his nose.
A green flame wicked to life from the pour of his green eye's hue. "You really should just let me take the helm, Oh Bearer Mine," and Garrod could feel the flicks of green flame burn slashes about his lips. Stung sharp. "It would make everything, so much easier," it laughed. Laughed. Laughed.
Garrod grit his teeth. Furrowed his sweat stuck brow. "Just a ways to go," he said as he carried the piggybacked Daniyah another set of hard one steps. The orange glow of distant fires, pouring through high windows cut through the thin grey mire fog. Boots sloshed. The earth gave beneath, and he sank knee deep. Felt the stuck. "Chingada madre!" he cursed betwixt his teeth.
The green flame about his eye sparked laughter. Hissed joy. "Stubborn, oh so stubborn, Oh Bearer Mine." the flames winked out.
A growl through Garrod's throat. But a flicker farther caught his eye. Little lights dancing across the mounds and rocks, moss covered islands amidst the dark waters so tannin stained. That same water that sucked at his boots, and sank through his threads. Steadied his breath. As those long legged flames tiptoed and pranced with pirouette.
The fog crept across the surface once more. And Garrod hissed. Forced his leg forward. One step, two. Found purchase beneath his soles. A second. And another. But the veils drew thick. Swirled and folded over one another, multitude tendrils turned to silvery cloth. He could not see through it. Grit. Growled.
Adjusted Daniyah's weight against his back. Arms scooping up her highs again. Marched. He knew the way. Could still see the flames. The glow. There through the fog. Nothing but a ghost of his frayed memory. Sacttering with all the silver and grey.
His lungs labored, muscles strained with the weight of an injured other. "All the damned mirrors, cracked and scattered," he grumbled.
A bog bird crooked out its haunting note. Frog ribbits and croaks underscored by bug wings and glow bugs as the waters gently lapped.
Lapped. Like the cut of wooden blade through the drink. Hull cutting through the waters.
Garrod drew in his breath. "Shit," he hushed, and stilled.
Cut. Trickle. Splash. Cut. Trickle. Splash. Like clockwork. And there in the silver, made to glow with four moon's light, a figure darkened as it grew closer. Tall and malformed. Like a proud stump, with too many burls. Cut. Trickle. Splash. Two dots of silver burned brighter still through the fog that looked dull about those white flames. Cut. Trickle. Splash. The figure glid toward them.
"You are lost?" the figure called out. The gleam of old plate, catching the moons' light. A ghastly collection of skulls, there atop the rusted old suit. Only one such skull had eyes of starfire, and a mouth the moved. Clatter and clack. "I can guide you," Cut... Trickle.. Splash.
There atop a pan hulled raft, stood their would be ferryman.
"Plenty of room, for the two of you," he croaked out, with a voice all mold and dust. "The water," it warned. "It grows more dangerous here,"
