Born as fourth son to the von Liesenbourg line, Volmar isn’t just a spare heir twice redundant. He’s a bastard to boot, the spawn of a castle maidservant who’d had the bad luck to be refreshing the old man’s bedchambers when Lord Helmut returned earlier than expected from a fruitless hunt, only to find his game had come to him instead. Nine-ish months and a lot of whispered gossip later, little baby Volmar was born.

Maybe things would have been different if everyone could just… pretend. But as the boy got older, as he came to resemble his father more closely, as the whispers lingered year after year, his very existence became irrefutable proof of Markgraff Helmut von Liesenbourg’s indiscretions. Once other lords and ladies visiting the manor began asking why Helmut’s youngest was running around in servant’s rags, there was no hope of pretending any more.

Volmar was six years old when he was packed up and shipped off to Astenvale Monastery. He remembers his mother wailed for him while towering figures carried them further and further apart, until he couldn’t hear her any more. And he recalls that the journey after that was long and bumpy, though he has only a couple vague snippets of it in his memory: half-eaten maslin in his tiny fingers as he cowered in the shadows of big men, sat aback a simple wagon. He didn’t understand any of it — why he’d been taken, where he’d been taken to, what he was expected to do there… and why his mother suddenly wasn’t around any more.

Astenvale Monastery. Took him a while to realise it, but that was his home from then on.

An heir and a spare, and a spare, and a spare. An inconvenient bastard, a blemish on the house’s name and a troublesome wrinkle in the line of succession. The Liesenbourgs knew all that when they ‘gave’ him away. What they didn’t know was that Volmar had the gift.

Quite a hefty dose of it, in fact. His arrival at the order might have happened just in time, because a six-year-old who can fire off lightning from his fingertips and make knives fly through the air tends to require specialist handling. Or maybe it was the stress of separation which forced his latent power to manifest in response. Either way, the Knights of Anathaeum suddenly had an upset, confused, and frightened little weaver on their hands.

Life became terribly strict for Volmar. It had to be, so he could come to control his magic before it caused real harm. But that didn’t mean he understood the why of it any better. Just as the world became a severe and demanding place, so Volmar turned into a serious, unforgiving little prospect. Then a squire, and in time, a true knight.

He never returned to Liesenbourg. Too much risk of causing some sort of political incident; there are always factions vying for clout behind the scenes, and even if Volmar had no interest in competing for position of heir apparent, the risk that someone might try and use him as an asset in their own game was too great. And when he learned his mother had passed after taking ill, there simply wasn’t any reason to spare another thought for the place.

Now Syr Volmar dedicates himself to Astenvale Monastery and its cause. He’s known little family besides the order, nor any other way of life, and he’s content enough with that. It pleases him to be pledged to an ideal rather than a crown, to be freed from the pathetic machinations of Altalusia’s self-serving, short-sighted aristocracy. In fact, it pleases him greatly to so often be such a thorn in their side; to be the bramble patch which shreds apart greedy hands when they reach to claim what isn’t theirs. Strangely enough, it also pleases Volmar to have just enough breeding and formal upbringing to move through high society when the job calls for it, wooing and charming his way along one moment, then in the next, skirting the boundaries of etiquette to leave a trail of red-faced, indignant nobles in his wake.

And it pleases him to have such power, by sword and by spell. He had everything taken away once before. Had been helpless to stop it back then. But now, woe betide anyone who dares try that shit again — or who gets between him and that which he desires.

Tall (‘nearly’ six foot is tall, OK?) and muscular, with boyishly handsome features which verge on being outright pretty, under a playful mop of blond hair and set with deep, dark brown eyes… Volmar’s a bit of a looker, and he knows this. His voice is lyrical and clear, masculine without being deep and booming.

Volmar’s most often dressed in shirt and doublet, paned trunk hosen plus stockings, good shoes with a bit of a heel on them. And he likes black. Wears a lot of black; black linen, black felt, black leather. It kind of makes him look like the villain from some schlocky stage production, but maybe that’s intentional.

Personality

When he wants to charm, he’s got a bright, easy smile and a focus which makes you feel like the centre of the universe. But when he’s not putting on that mask, Volmar’s demeanour might be described as ‘frosty’. Reserved. Lacedæmonian. Keeps his cards close to his chest, while counting the deck to figure out what you’ve got in yours. The man is almost always playing some sort of game with people, though gods only know what kind of winnings he’s interested in. But it means that even if he seems cold and distant, odds are good you’re being thoroughly appraised by the mind behind those dark eyes.

Other times he might come right out and push someone’s buttons, just to see what they do. It really depends what kind of mood he’s in.

As such, it’s easy to assume Volmar doesn’t much like people. But that’s not— OK, actually yes, he doesn’t like most people. Downright contemptuous of a fair few, in truth. But he likes messing with people, and every now and then, he finds a suitable playmate. Someone who gives him a run for his money, perhaps, or who’s even more twisted than he is. Someone fun. Those are the ones he gets attached to, and it can be like all the affection he saves from spending on other people goes into these bonds instead. Man might get a little intense at times, is what I’m saying.

Skills

MARTIAL

ARMS

  • Highly skilled: sword, dagger, lance, & poleaxe
  • Skilled: crossbow, mace, quarterstaff, spear, & unarmed.

COMMAND

  • Highly skilled: skirmisher formation fighting, mounted & small unit tactics
  • Skilled: close order formation fighting, logistics, & strategy

MOUNTED COMBAT

  • Skilled: general equestrianism, heavy cavalry & shock manoeuvres

PURSUITS

  • Flame — pursuant: Volmar is a highly proficient and powerful wielder of the elemental forces behind lightning and lodestones. In addition, he is a skilled smith, blending his weave into the craft to achieve otherwise impossible feats, much as his fighting technique seamlessly incorporates his spellcraft.
  • Loch: moderately well-read. Volmar’s no Loch-diver, no master on the subjects of illusions and bewitchments of the mind. But he does have a good understanding of magic principles, which combines with his talents in Flame such that he can create some magitech items.
  • Life: more interested in taking people apart than putting them back together again. Knows some basic first aid. And has used it enough times to at least be competent with it.
  • Death: his knowledge here is a little patchy. That’s why they always team you up with a dusker, though, right?
  • Wyld: a capable outdoorsman and hunter, possessed of an incredible sense of direction, as explained below.

WEAVING

At its essence, Volmar has a strong ability to manipulate electrical charges and fields around him. This electrogenesis can manifest in a few different ways:

EHANCED IMPULSES

Supplementing naturally-generated action potentials with a bit of weaving, Volmar can improve his reflexes, muscular contractions, even some neural synaptic speed (though messing around too much with the grey stuff upstairs can get a bit dicey). While this requires relatively little draw upon the Shroud, these bouts of heightened physical prowess are more taxing on his body than its baseline level of function. Still, it’s his go-to technique, since it’s arguably the most discreet. This preternatural speed is also part of the reason folks have taken to calling him ‘the Viper’. The other reasons… probably aren’t quite so flattering.

ELECTROMAGNETISM

Volmar can use local conductive material (e.g. his swords and plate armour) to create and manipulate magnetic fields. An opponent might find their blade glued to his in a bind, or glanced away from its intended target by an invisible parry. A wildly-oscillating field might cause hails of iron-tipped arrows to spin madly out of control, rendered mostly harmless. And he can use it when smithing to impart a uniform atomic alignment on superheated iron, creating permanent ferromagnets. Neat!

ELECTROSTATIC DISCHARGE

This can range from more subtle, incapacitating shocks delivered by touch, to full-on, wrath-of-the-gods lightning strikes. The latter rarely make an appearance given the sheer effort usually involved, but sometimes, the only solution to a problem is brute force — and when it comes to force, it’s hard to top 10,000 amps of skin-melting goodness.

MAGNETORECEPTION

Possibly thanks to manifesting his weaving at such a young age, Volmar’s body has adapted to perceive magnetic fields, and consequently, any magnetic material which interacts with them. It’s pretty handy, being able to fight in complete darkness so long as your opponent is using iron, or having eyes in the back of your head when someone’s coming up from behind to plant a dagger in your ribs. It also means Volmar always knows the direction of Khurun’s magnetic north. Well, so long as he’s not standing around any strong magnets, anyway.

SOCIAL

Ironically enough, while Volmar was only ever a servant child while at the von Liesenbourg manor, since he is of noble lineage, the Knights of Anathaeum made sure to raise him as such. He has been trained in etiquette, rhetoric, dance, poetry, and other aristocratic expectations, some of which already overlaps with Astenvale’s teachings (e.g. literacy and numeracy). Volmar can move gracefully enough amidst the upper classes when he wishes to do so, which isn’t always, and rarely lasts long.
