“Love is like wildflowers, it’s often found in the most unlikely places.” -Ralph Waldo Emerson

Everyone she once held dear is dead.

Hanae rises each day before the birds themselves wake. She takes her time removing her bedding and carefully folding up her blanket and sleeping mat. She can do this without much thought, so she plans her day. Like yesterday, she will change into clothes with many layers to keep her warm. She will slide on her shoes, left foot first as usual, and then head out to her garden from a sliding door in her bedroom. She begins with the watering schedule and fertilizing before pruning and preening every plant in her garden and greenhouse. If anything needs to be harvested, she will do so, but there are days her baskets remain empty. She will search for pests when the light from the sun is bright overhead, and with her morning now settled away like every day before, Hanae might treat herself to an afternoon tea.

She will remove her shoes before entering her home, not through the door from her bedroom but from a door that leads into the kitchen. The kitchen will be cold, the shade of trees shielding it from the sun, and it will take Hanae some time to get a fire going. There are shelves and boxes, everything neatly organized to Hanae's liking. In the summertime, her routine changes slightly with her enjoying a cold cup of barley tea instead of a steaming cup of green. Once the tea has settled her growling stomach, she will go outside once more, preparing her heavy cart with flowers of the season. It always takes her an hour to get to her spot, the busy square where the blue district meets the red, and she will set up her shop in the afternoon, not leaving until the evening when the sun is setting, and the sky is orange-streaked with violet.

Hanae returns home when it is dark, using a lantern to light her way, but she knows this lonely road that only she takes to get home. She will put everything away and then head inside to prepare dinner. She always has soup, a bowl of mixed rice, and a steamed vegetable that is lightly seasoned. She eats quietly and slowly, watching the shadows dance along the wall because of the lone candle on the table. Sometimes, Hanae is too tired to light a lantern. Sometimes, the candle is her only companion, and the flickering flame distracts her tired eyes.

Sometimes, Hanae gets lost in her thoughts, thinking about the past and the dead and all the blood she had to scrub out of these floors. That gets her thinking about the future. She'll wonder when they'll be back and whether she can hide again or grovel better than her father as she finishes chewing her last mouthful of rice. She'll clean up her mess, sweep the coals, and perhaps make a mental note about stopping by the chicken farmer to get more fertilizer. She'll take a long, hot bath, clean her hair, remember that tomorrow she absolutely must do laundry, and then prepare her bed mat and bedding for a long night of sleep.

And tomorrow, she'll do it all over again.
This is the lonely life of Hanae Hirawa.

Hanae has a petite figure and a round face reminiscent of a doll. Slender and fragile, her skin is delicate, and simple pricks from thorns or even turning the page of a book are sure to draw blood. That said, she’s entirely soft, her figure only preserved through a hyper-fast metabolism. Hanae is also constantly cold; her skin always has an icy chill to it, even in summer.

Her face is charming and cute; even with a somber expression, it is still a face to unarm and put others at ease. Her two most remarkable features are her large, dark almond eyes and a radiant smile. A sharp, pointed chin and well-defined lips, always painted red, offer a pleasant contrast to her dark hair cut short and close to her face, the perfect frame to her porcelain skin.

She wears clothing that covers every bit of skin, preferring traditional high collars and long sleeves that taper nicely around her thin wrists. It's rumored that she has a colorful tattoo on her neck, but a credible source couldn't ever quite confirm it.

Personality

Hanae is a soft-spoken yet cheerful individual. There’s an eagerness to help and care for others, and oftentimes, this leads her to get taken advantage of or bamboozled whenever she hears a sob story. Ironically, she loves story-telling, history, and fairytales. Appreciative of any and all small gestures, her diminutive hands only know how to love. Despite being fragile, Hanae has displayed plenty of grit and always accomplishes whatever she wants to set her mind to.

One of her most charming features is her desire to “win/achieve” whatever goal she has set forth, and it is usually the only reason why her bad business skills haven’t buried her alive just yet. It’s true that Hanae is horrendous with numbers, whether it’s mathematics, economics, or business. She’s easily distracted on tasks that don’t appeal to her and sitting down at a table and studying bore her to be bits. Hanae is rather kinetic and works best with her hands.

She tends to cry when frustrated, and while she usually avoids confrontations, she has never been one to sit back and watch injustice unfold before her eyes. Or rather, now she is unable to do that. As a child, she often hid from things that frightened her or would quickly apologize to anyone upset with her. Now, Hanae is attempting to face her fears. She’s terribly afraid of spiders and fire and blood, and unfortunately, every now and then she will freeze when confronted by these fears.

Skills

  • Gardening, flower arrangement, poisons, knowledge of all plants— all the things a florist expects to know and understand. Hanae has quite the green thumb; more than once, she has nursed a dying plant back to health.
  • Herbal remedies and poisons are just part of the trade.
  • Hanae can cook only simple items and prefers making quick and nutritious food— and often warm, as she’s constantly cold. She rarely buys and prepares meat, finding it cheaper to stick to a plant-based diet.
  • She makes a perfect cup of tea— probably due to her growing and tending to her small tea trees. She also has the unique talent of tying teabags.
  • Hanae has a keen eye for fashion and color theory. She is an artist, even if she sells her bouquets for much less.
  • Great with children, the elderly, and animals.
  • Proficient with a bone-made flute from red-crowned cranes called a gudi. It should be noted that killing red-crowned cranes is illegal, with most flutes now made with bamboo or other materials. This item is old and valuable, and Hanae takes such good care that she hardly ever uses it. Besides, some say gudis were used to spread messages for only shadows to decipher.
