There is a legend passed down in Maewa’s village.
One day, returning from his hunt, a man found a starving E’lang hound on the side of the road. Enormous and terrifying, these beasts were portents of disaster; if their howls echoed through the night, it was best to keep to the village for a few days, with the gates shut tight. Though the hound before him was greatly weakened, its eyes shone bright with warning, teeth each as long as the man’s arm.
Despite the danger, the kind man took pity on the creature, and shared his bounty of rabbit and geese from the day’s hunt. Once recovered, the beast would appear before the hunter again, grateful, and join him on his forays into the forest. Thus was the first of these hounds tamed, and its descendants go on to become stalwart companions to the people of the village.
------
The Da’lang hounds that Maewa’s family raises are smaller and softer in appearance than those ancient E’lang hounds, though no less fierce nor loyal. They make good partners for warriors, bearing their masters on their backs, or lunging into the fray of battle alongside them. The ranchers of Selvaris swear by them for keeping even the most unruly of livestock in check, not to mention deterring thieves. Cloaks and blankets woven from their fur are a boon on a cold winter’s night, and beautiful enough to bring in coin from distant markets.
Maewa learned the ins and outs of raising Da’lang hounds from her parents. When she was 10, her mother and father gifted Maewa her own hound, Noa. From that day forth, he would never leave her side.
Her uncle runs a company of caravan guards, the Silverfangs, who earn their keep escorting cargo and passengers across South Ilica. It was from him that Maewa learned martial arts, and from him that Maewa learned of the wider world beyond her village. Once old enough to make the decision for herself, she joined on with her uncle’s company.
Appearance
Height 5'5
Build Athletic
Hair Red, wispy
Eyes Brown
A young woman of average height, whose gentle facial features are only just starting to harden after two years of serving as a caravan guard in her uncle’s company. Maewa has excellent control over her body, trained on years of riding her Da’long hound, Noa, and she wields her sword rather well for the youngest and smallest member of the Silverfangs.
Her tunics and trousers are linen and cotton, with only simple armor for her work: breastplate, bracers and greaves of boiled leather. Maewa carries her sword alternately on her back or waist, and a dagger on the opposite hip.
Noa has the size and presence of a prized warhorse, with a coat of fine white fur.

Personality
Maewa is soft-spoken and somewhat timid, a strange contrast to the great Da’long hound who follows her like a shadow. She is aware of her general inexperience with worldly matters, and yields like a green branch to the will of a perceived elder or superior, even if it would go against her instincts. Yet like many young warriors, Maewa is eager to prove her worth, and faces danger with the bold determination of a seasoned fighter.
She has a love for romantic and pretty things--flowers, poetry, silken fabrics, glittery little baubles that can be wrapped around the wrist or worn in hair. Maewa is good-hearted, and easily roused to indignation in the face of cruelty or deceit.
Noa is calm and proud. He suffers no one but Maewa (or her family) to ride his saddle. He would not bite without her instruction, but is not above a flash of teeth or a warning growl at perceived offense to his mistress.

Skills
- Da’lang hound-riding. Maewa hasn’t had the occasion to try other mountable beasts besides horses, but she could pick it up fairly quickly.
- Da’lang hound command. The strength of her bond with Noa is such that she can issue orders with just body language, if need be.
- Swordsmanship, average proficiency for her years.
- Unarmed combat, average proficiency for her years.
- Mounted combat, a common feat among the warriors of her village.
- Simple medicine. What herbs can be boiled in tea, or even chewed raw, to ease the soreness of a day’s riding, or the sting of a healing battle wound.
- Basic reading, writing, and arithmetic.
