Frayed as himself was at the edges, he tensed up against the heft come leaning against him. From her clutches he’d free but the one hand, more for him than for her, that he may wrap an arm around her shoulders. It was hard to listen to the sobbing, beneath which he merely exhaled, long and weary through the nose in that way that deflated all the air from a man. Holding on, lulled to some strange peace by how warm she was, he pressed his lips against the pale wisps at the top of her head and, belatedly, spoke.

“ We should try and get some sleep. “
