There were several reasons why she reached for the bottle. Some were obvious, numbing the aches in her body, silencing the constant gnaw of bad memories, blunting the sharp edge of emotions before they could cut too deep. But there was another reason, one not so easily guessed at. A mind in disarray was a storm no spirit could easily navigate. Drunken thoughts tangled and slipped through themselves like smoke in a draft, making it harder for ghosts... or anything else with a hunger for mortal minds, to find their way in.

A steady head might make you a better swordsman, but a chaotic one could make you a harder target in the unseen war she fought every night.

The mule’s hooves clopped in a slow, stubborn rhythm as Daniyah rode in from the tree line, its shaggy ears twitching at Garrod’s voice. Just as Oscar, now a battered bundle of charms and talismans hung from the pale mule’s bridle, teeth, bones, and silver coins. Braided now in its mane, a small copper bell that pinged softly with each step it took.

"Please tell me you at least get yourself something good to drown in?"
"You aren't passed out in the bushes, are you?"

She sat slouched in the saddle, flask in hand, the silver etched with hair-thin runes that caught the last smear of orange sky.
"It's poison."
she said, taking a pull. The words dragged just a breath too long, as if breathing were difficult. “Henbane to loosen the soul... datura to make the dead visible. Little plum brandy in there too, so it doesn’t taste like a grave." Her smile was crooked, slow to fade, eyes glassy but weirdly alert.

"Old crones call it Widow's Breath."

She slid from the mule in one fluid motion, though the way her boots found the dirt wasn’t steady. A slow sway ran through her frame. Daniyah lingered there, hand on the saddle, head dipped. The dirt beneath her boots seemed to breathe, slow and deep, and for a heartbeat her toes curled as if feeling for a pulse. The mules shifted beside her, chewing at nothing, unbothered.

Her eyes, half-lidded, caught glimmers where there shouldn’t be any. Phantom lanterns bobbed in the treeline, the faint outline of someone leaning from the shadows to watch them. Her talismans whispered against one another, wolf teeth and iron nails and bits of glass that caught what little light there was. And somewhere, as far away as tomorrow, she heard the faint echo of a sad, lonely song.

The man shed his armor and clothes without care, slipping into the easy comfort of the evening. Her night was never hers to surrender. Her fight was never in the sunlit fields but in the cold, haunted hours when sleep became a weakness. Nights were no refuge; the veil between the living and the dead thinned to a hair-thin line.

With heavy, slightly uncoordinated movements, she pulled some copper bells from the saddle bags, their faint chimes barely cutting through the haze clogging her mind. The poison twisted her vision. For a moment, her fingers itched to braid the bells into his hair, like she had with the mules, but she kept her fingers to herself. “Wear these.” She held them out to him. "Please."

It's poison.

"
That much is clear," he cut. Set his armor down with a crunch of dirt.

Went on to list the fucking cocktail. Garrod supposed, realization turned to grumble in his throat, he had asked about it.

To loosen the soul and make the dead visible. His eye found her. Narrowed and pointed.

"Well, at least you look proud of yourself for once," he said, eyeing the happy slant of her lips. Grit his teeth. Same stupid fucking smile.

"Old Crones call it Widow's Breath."

"That so?" Went and slipped the iron gauntlet off of his left. Stared at the white strapped to his right a moment too long.

Will you be rid of those accursed, coins, Oh Bearer Mine. Belephus raked at his mind with purr, delighted and enraged in the anguish. They are quite detestable. It snarled.

Put a weird smile on Garrod's lips. Fingers to the ties that kept his pale passenger strapped.

"You gonna share?" he found himself asking.

Heard her stumbling about before any answer came. Brow scrunched as he fixed his eye on her. Wobble and wave with bells chiming. The mules just watched. Same things tied into their manes.

"What the hell are you doing?" he bared teeth as she stepped closer. Eyes trained on him. "How much did you fucking drink, Daniyah?"

"Wear these." They chimed loud in his ears. His eye flared wide, and teeth ground tight. "Please."

His eye burrowed into her. "What the hell for?" he hissed. A step back from her wobble and sway. Charms raised at him like he was some creature of the night.

Would she be so wrong, Oh Bearer Mine?

His face twisted, rabid and fearful. "Don't you fucking touch me." he growled in warning. White boned fingers sharp as teeth and splayed wide at his side.

"You gonna share?"
"One mouthful to see the other side, two and you’ll join it.”

Daniyah warmed him and placed the bottle on a mossy rock between them.

"What the hell are you doing?"
"How much did you fucking drink, Daniyah?"

Daniyah didn’t flinch as he bared his teeth, suspicion burning in his eyes. Her own gaze held firm, despite the poison thick in her veins and the restless shadows crawling at the edge of her vision. “These bells? They’re wards, nothing more. Old magic to keep old spirits away." Spirits hated the sound of copper bells. The bells, they don’t just ring. They scream in a language the restless understand.

“I’m not here to take anything from you, not your beloved arm-piece... not a thing.”

She held up her hands, slow and open, the bells tangled between her fingers. "I am not touching you." Daniyah said low, steady, voice a rough whisper. He looked afraid, and she felt like she was calming a snarling beast backed into a corner. She took a slow breath, the faint clink of the bells as she slowly lowered her hands.

"You don’t have wear them.” She slipped them into a pouch on her belt. Carefully, she stepped back. She would not force this, even if it would make her night easier. She turned away from him.

"Rest well then, Garrod One-Eye"

Rest. With all the clatter and clang. Chime and rattle. Sounds come bounce about that space betwixt his skull.

Not here to take anything. Save what rest he might
have found.

So he curled and coiled instead. As he watched her hands raised. Watched her turn and go. Copper bells hissing and whispering and speaking there between the walls of his mind. As she put them away. Still their voices pushed at the darkness of his missing eye.

Alone at his side of camp, clutched to himself, by the grip of pale hand. He spied her over the rise of his knees. He watched her, with his one eye. Wide and open.

Wraithbinder... Lantern bearer The old Hunger tested on its tongues.

She lowered herself onto the cold ground without a glance his way, settling cross-legged.

Daniyah laid the ghost blade across her one thigh, the black blade etched with runes that drank in the firelight rather than reflected it. Beside her, she set a narrow iron lantern, its panes clouded.

From her satchel she drew a handful of charms, a bundle of dried sage, knotted cords, a crow skull painted in ochre, one big iron nail and set them in a half-circle in front of her.

Her eyes closed. Her breathing slowed, but not in peace, more the steady control of someone standing on a cliff edge, listening for the wind’s shift.

She could feel his gaze; it needled along her skin. And under his gaze, the other thing, that hunger that didn’t belong to him, prowled and whispered, curling around the edges of his thoughts like smoke.

"Keep staring and I’ll start charging you, creep."

The gauntlet's jeweled eye watched from where it draped across his legs Claws digging into meat. Protective as a cat guarding it's kill.

"I'm already paying you," he cut over the sounds of growing night, ritual, and coin draped mules. "or are you so drunk you forgot?"

A child's anger. Simple and needlessly cruel. But there in the root laid. Another drunk, too lost on their own legend to see anything worth seeing.

Eyes still closed, she didn’t move, didn’t even shift her breathing.

"Guess that means you owe me two gold now." she murmured.

A faint curl at the corner of her lips, as if she could feel his temper prickle in the air.

A snort. "Make it ten, what difference will it make?" shook his head. "Just earn enough to drown yourself in another hole," mind enough on the real of things to pull the clawed fingers off of him.

Turned the arm over. Watched the odd bone shimmer. Like swamp oil, thick on the water. Looked at the straps again. Started pulling them loose. Unbuckled the binds, and dug under the leather to peel the thing off.

Felt the tenderness of his flesh. Too raw against the touch of wind, and press of his finger bones. Odd scent of something too far gone twisting in his mind. Stopped him cold with a new strange dread blooming down in his gut.

A hiss of laughter. Feint against the chime of the coins. Quieter now, for all the ritual.

Garrod 's eye shift back to the Wraithbinder. Like the gnomon stone on a dial, catching whatever light fell across her. Eerily still, given how much she wobbled and sloshed not minutes ago.

Shucked the gauntlet loose. Tossed it next to the rest of his kit. The thing fell like a spent shellfish. All jagged edges and carapace. His paled right arm it's meat. He got up. Sifted through his pack.

A wooden bowl. Vials of oils. A bar of rose scented soap. A good cotton rag. Water skin. Set them down and poured water into the black elm wood bowl.

“More coin, better booze, right? Lucky me." A bitter smile twisted her lips.

Daniyah remained still, eyes closed, sinking deeper into the ghostly chorus that hummed beneath the evening. Soft, ragged breaths of the restless dead threading through the darkness. Breathing even when they did not need to. They were there, lurking just beyond the light’s reach.

Then came the subtle sound, the scrape of leather, the snap of buckles undone. Her sense flickered open, just enough to catch the faintest shift in the air as Garrod peeled away the gauntlet. A harsh hiss cut through the murmurs, laughter sharp and fleeting, mingling with the soft chime of bells braided into the mule's manes.

Daniyah turned her head slowly, eyes narrowing as she watched him. A question lingered in the night air; how had the man and that cursed piece of armor become so tangled, so inseparable? Her gaze flicked to the bowl and his quiet preparations.

“Do you hear its voice even when you don't wear it?”

He stared at the small pool of clean water. Lone green eye tracing the run of blade across his neck. The black patch where it's twin used to be.

What did it matter to her that he could hear it in his sleep. That the damn thing kept him alive, time and time again.

That he owed it, more than it took. And it always just grew louder. Hard to separate it's thoughts from his.

Just sizing him up. No doubt.

Measuring the amount of string she would have to tie him up with, or the number of bells she'd weave into his skin. Leave him hanging upside down and bloodless beneath an old cedar tree.

Would she take his bones after she'd spent all the coin on the booze? Or were they too cursed?

He laughed. Just as bitter

Probably make a fine blade out of the ashes at least.

He dipped the blood colored cloth in the water. Cool against his pruney fingertips. Grabbed the bar of soap, and worked small circles into it. Gathered suds. Dunked them in the water.

Smell of roses bloomed against the strange stink of his arm. Ring out. Repeat.

Heard the mules clop with their shifts. Twitch of their ears. Snap of their tales.

"I never said anything about a voice," More tired than anything else. Shook his head as he let the cloth soak in the sud laden vessel. "Have I become your little project, Daniyah?"Packed up the soap in its wax cloth. Undid the ties of his arming doublet. Pulled loose the padded fabric, and out his right arm.

Scar laden and mangled all along the line of tendon and artery. Where teeth had sunk in. Where acid burned and the fiends magic did its work.

Left hand pulled the cloth up out of the rose scented water. Squeezed its drops over what almost looked another man's arm attached at the elbow. Marred and discolored as it was.

Ran the cloth gentle over the rise and fall of stubborn muscle and bone. Still his. Still felt it.

"In my dreams, mostly," he confessed. Ringing the wrag free of his muck. Worked more suds into it. "Feint whispers, from time to time," clicked his teeth. Let the rag back down off a fresh run down the limb. "Forgot the drying rag," got up, back to the pack. Snapped fresh cloth out, pat himself dry.

The whispers faded as Daniyah’s focus broke. She sighed.

Her lips curved into a slow, knowing smile, the kind that promised nothing. There is always a voice or voices. Just as natural as the color of the sky. A truth neither comfort nor curse, but simply a fact of the world and unworld. The henbane and datura clawed at her senses, twisting reality’s edges, turning every sound into a distant echo and every shadow into something alive. Her limbs felt leaden, yet a restless energy thrummed beneath the dullness.

Despite the fog, or perhaps because of it, she caught herself studying him. Her gaze lingered on him longer than necessary, the flickering firelight casting shadows that danced across his muscular frame as he bent over the basin. The raw lines of muscle tensed and flexed beneath pale skin. A man used to survival, the taut strength beneath the skin. She couldn’t help the brief, almost reluctant admiration. Oh, hell no! He dipped his rag into the basin and began to scrub, steam curling up with the scent of rose soap.

“That soap...” she added. “... smells like a whorehouse.” A grim smirk tugged at the corner of her mouth.

“You’re no project of mine. Stop telling yourself I am interested in your fuck-up!" She glanced away from him, then to that chest, strapped tightly to the mule Oscar. The content of that chest was her true burden, her project. Everything else was small, too small in comparison. Everything else, the arguments, the wounds, the poison fog clouding her mind... it all felt small. Insignificant. Compared to the storm that waited patiently inside that chest.

“Dreams are where the worst things get loudest.” she murmured. The pale eyes lingered on him for a moment longer before she reached down and picked up the bundle of dried sage lying nearby. She crushed a few brittle leaves between her palms, releasing a sharp, earthy scent that sliced through the damp night air.

"You've something against whores? voice all rasp of knife as he eyed her.

Let the barbs dig in a moment. Familiar hurts, those. Watched her eyes trail to her mule. Saw the big chest strapped there to it.

Felt the green smile split behind his missing eye.

Snapped drying cloth over his bare shoulder.

Set his eye down to the bowl. The rose scented water, dirtied with his mess. Spilled it out. Grabbed up the vials of oil. Tall one first. Pulled the cork. Poured some in. Nutty and golden. Smelled faintly of pine smoke. Capped. Grabbed the smaller vial. Poured two drops.

The silver crisp and pine scent of lavender spread about the muggy heat of their camp. He dabbed his fingers in the oil, rolled the tips in the well of the bowl, friction bringing some warmth to the mixture.

"What do you dream of, Wraithbinder?"

Worked the ointment into his mangled limb. Gentle with the press finger tips and the spread across relaxed fibers that threatened to tremble and shake.

“Plenty against them.” she said, letting the words roll lazy as smoke. But she never let that stop her from enjoying their company. "Especially the ones that stink." She hated the way a brothel clung to her skin long after she left. Hated how the air there fed the gnawing thing inside her, the one that was equal parts hunger and despair. She hated how hope bled out in those rooms. How she could walk in with her chin high, and somewhere between the first touch and the last sigh, she’d turn desperate. The way it clawed at her, raw and unyielding, leaving her feeling smaller, more fractured than before.

Desperate to be wanted, if only for the flicker of a moment. To be looked at like she was worth something. To be seen, as something warm and alive. She hoped, sometimes almost welcomed, that one night it would all go wrong. That the brothel owner would lose patience and snap. That she’d catch some cruel disease in the dark corners. That fate would finally cut her loose.

Somehow, she kept surviving. The world kept turning, and she kept walking away. Slowly, she shifted, settling back onto her knees, folding her hands in her lap. Ghost blade on the ground in front of her. Daniyah inhaled sharply, rose and lavender tickled in her nose.

Rose and lavender.

She watched him work the ointments into his mangled arm. “I don’t” she said simply. Most nights, she meditated or drank herself to oblivion. She had not dreamt anything since Greyhollow-by-the-Sea. Things that used to wake her in the night, was things that made her wish she had never closed her eyes at all.

She let out a long, bitter sigh, the weight of the question dragging at her chest. Why was she here?

“If that thing you carry can shatter the song of a Weeping Widow...” Her voice full of weariness. “You don’t need me to find her. ” Daniyah said, voice low and cold. She let her gaze drift downward, to the worn medallions scattered before her. Slowly, almost reluctantly, she reached out and began to gather them one by one. "You are wasting my time." the Wraithbinder stated. This was just another fruitless pursuit stealing pieces of her time and will.

A cocked brow.

"You don't," he parroted. Cold and hollowed out. None of the anger or derision there in his voice. Soft in the swirl of scents and sounds that mixed between them. Recognition. Or some strange straw doll of it.

Felt the tips of his oiled fingers against themselves. Flexed his right hand. Nerves in it, so set to fire and twitch, ache and twist in on themselves, felt still. Quiet. Lungful of rose, lavender, and sage.

Looked to her, all painted in the fire light and set to glitter with her medallions. Almost a warm lantern, against all the darkness that swirled just beyond them.

"You don't need me to find her... You are wasting my time."

"That so?" he tried on his tongue. Looked to his own sad ritual.

Stinky little whorehouse.

He laughed at that. Couldn't remember the last time he had taken the time for it. Pushed off the ground, dug for something in his pocket as he walked over to her.

Bent onto his knees, before her and her knife. Looked her in the eyes. Fire glow come off of the medallions danced across his skin. Ruined arm oil shined, and glowing. "For the help," laid a gold caza coin down at her feet. "and the, staring," laid a second stacked there with it. The smell of sage strong on his nose.

Bowed his head low enough to kiss the coins he had just set to offering, like some true believer. A moment, like reverence. Hinged straight up. "if you need anything," he pointed with his nose to the spot where the elm wood bowl still rest. Made to go.

She wondered if she’d finally had too much to drink ...because what the fuck was he doing? Her head tilting just enough to catch the full absurdity of him kneeling there. "What in all the screaming hells are you doing!?" What was that supposed to be? A mockery? A threat?

“For the help,” he had said. As if he hadn’t brushed aside every word she’d offered, trampling her knowledge with contempt. She had not done a damn thing for him.

She looked him over, slow, deliberate, from the oily ruined limb to the gold coins he’d kissed like some holy relic. The two coins lay gleaming in the dirt. Like two small suns.

Daniyah picked them both up, weighed them in her palm testing if they might be counterfeit or cursed. Then let one fall back. The sharp clink against a stone and the hard earth.

Not earned. Not wanted.

The other coin vanished into her hand. For the staring.

“If I need anything?” The words came out slow, drawn razor-thin. She studied him in the firelight, how the sudden change in attitude didn’t match the prick who’d done nothing but snap and sneer since the moment they crossed paths.

“If I needed anything from you, I’d be fucked beyond saving already.”

She rose and crossed the camp with quiet steps, the muted chime of charms marking her passage. The mules shifted in the shadows as she came to them, Oscar flicking an ear back at her. She adjusted a strap, fingers moving over leather and buckles, her thoughts already leaving this place.
