"Are these the circumstances?" The slur had almost come with a tease. Almost.
Walter offered the water, the pouch with snacks still between them. Wouldn't help a lot, just delay the inevitable enough not to throw up in the bushes. "We can keep tossing the coin, just a little break to water and piss, right? Want to go through more before everything's a blur. Now that I have company, it's... less a self-pity party."

He huffed under his breath, eyebrows raising slightly.
"It's almost nice. A bit strange. We didn't get to do anything fun for too long when we were younger, did we." He certainly didn't. Locked like a mouse in a trap of his father's making, pressed by everything he had to grow the backbone for.
A sprig of water into a half-open mouth, drops glistening on his lips and one dripping down his chin, to rinse out the taste - not of venison, but still of blood. It lingered. He eyed the bandage pressed to the wound from under the heavy eyelids.

"I did what I had to as someone with a home to protect, on that night. But I... we didn't have to fight. I suppose I just... I don't know."
He wanted to take the pressure off and run his tongue on the edge of the cut, taste the salt again, the madness that didn't come from nowhere. But he wouldn't know it any better with his better judgements so thoroughly clouded.

There was a slight tensing up at the touch, lips pressing together when a thumb brushed too close. Part stubborn, but bracing as if he was about to hurt, part protest. Too drunk to truly convey anything. The flush grew deeper, breath heavier, heart thudding in his chest with slow and deep reverberations. He had a weakness for warm hands, Walter thought, the tangents of the mind curling one onto the other in a tangling underbrush. His face tilted into the touch just a little, to prolong it for just a fraction of a beat.

"No, I don't."
He didn't regret doing what he did. He regretted having to do it. Veer between what he wanted and what was prescribed by law. The law dictated catspaws and bandits should be hung or quartered. Beheaded, if they were noble. But then, he just... couldn't. Sentimentality, pity for someone not right in their mind, perhaps, perhaps the ghost of former friendship. Something. Something made him maneuver until he could at least let this one go.

He didn't want to think about it, either, and leaned to half an arm's length closer, watching the coin ripple in the air - too slow to track the movements.
"What do I want?.." He echoed absent-mindedly. "What do I want from life..."
He slumped from sitting up against the prop of an elbow to lying back down, that improvised cushion soft under his neck, and thought.

"To live, I could say," he mused. "Sooner or later, the years will find us all. But I don't need to want that. Everything I want is... things I can't do by myself. I remember wanting to share a love, share the road with someone, but that... I think that may be too complicated. Depend on too much commitment and happenstance. Don't know if that's an answer, so... what are we drinking, again."
He found a bottle, took a swig. Set it into the sand with an unsteady hand. Sent his coin flying in an arc, leaned over to figure out which side was glinting on the ground.

"What do you want, in this world?"

He let go, and the gloved hand rested across his own stomach as Walter lay there, watched the darkening sky peeking through the canopy. The little fire would die unless he mustered will to conquer his reluctance and feed it some.
He was quite a simple creature, he thought idly. Applied himself to everything he could do, asked for help where he needed it, always picked himself up, in the end. He wanted for what he failed to obtain, of course - and what he could not have alone.

His eyes drifted to the rising figure, tracked it calf to hip to waist to shoulder, affixed to a point on the back once Laric started moving.
People were unreliable. Volatile. Some reveled in the state of disrepair. Some were like pigs that wallowed in filth, then bemoaned a clean surface. Some simply found it too hard to be decent when they'd only felt a comfort in hardship they brought onto themselves.
He was approximating to the latter sort, Walter thought. At least the number of moronic choices was decreasing.
Laric, meanwhile, embodied what Laric claimed to yearn for, and seemed to find some solace in that.

"Didn't think you'd be short of complications, being a lord's son," Walter muttered. "Why'd you think it's so hard to sing when you're drunk? I still know all the words, but it's almost like my bellows aren't bellowing... irksome, that."

"Oh? You know, you might be right," Walter rose on his elbow, trying to figure out what the other was doing, then sat up, grunting low as he stretched his shoulders and slowly, sluggishly took time to tidy up.

Nothing fancy at the speed he was going - while his company was about in the forest, Walter put the bottles together, made sure things were corked or sealed and didn't risk spilling over on a clumsy topple. Checked the spot where the glass shards have been dug around with the gloved fingers, found a couple smaller, thinner, tricky bits stuck to the fabric. Tied up the pouch with food, adjusted his own clothes some, especially the right sleeve. And dove into the saddlebag to get a small stitching kit out - a flat case with a needle, silk thread, wrapped up cotton bandage and a small blade for extracting debris or cutting bandage up.

It's been a while since he needed emergency stitches, but one never knew when misadventure would strike - and he did have an unfortunate wealth of experience stitching wounds up on Captain's Dogs.

"Not at all," he replied, an appreciative eyebrow perked at the gathered kindling. The bit of his shirt finally ending up in a fire made him chuckle, and offer the wound kit. "Right..."
He sat up straighter, loosely cross-legged, one hand rested at the knee. Pondered a few moments, ruffling the hair at the back of his head with the other hand, clearing his throat, suddenly at odds with the desire to finish that song he'd gotten through the first stanza off before Laric's arrival - it was, after all, of his own writing. He had a couple others.

Had to avoid staring at the reopened cut. He could smell the blood from where he was sitting, which, given, wasn't very far. The breeze tiding over the campsite brought some pleasant chill to the heated face.
"Whither have we gone, from a meadow of ferns,
From the brush, a whisper, and clasping hands?"
He was hoarser, the drinking did nothing for the vocal cords, and they were dried now, timbre crackling and unsteady as Walter struggled to stay on the notes of the tune. But while the diapason of the melody picked was simple, the turns in it were treacherous.
"Dancing in the snow, cleaving steel to bone,
For some foreign kings, in foreign lands.

Seasons turn to bloom as the heavens turn,
From the summer brook glints the morning sun;
If you lay with me amidst the ferns,
There's no greater prize that I'd have wo-wuh..."

The breeze blew smoke straight into his inhale, and Walter's eyes watered as his throat convulsed. He coughed, covering his mouth, and broke the tune completely, coughing and adding in some rather mild but colorful cusses in a hissed Altalusian, completely off-key just as well.

He noticed the stare. Almost palpable, and who knew what feeling was defining it. But, he could hazard a guess, so that all prior heartbreaks didn't burn for naught. Though his gaze was not seeking to peel layers and glide along the shadows between the folds of fabric and the tender skin - he was looking, too.

It just took a bit before sinking in. Walter eyed Laric as he uncorked the waterskin, squirted a thin stream into his eyes before redirecting the tail end of it into the open mouth, and passed the skin back, good hand passing over the face in an impromptu washup that darkened the shirt and glistened in a few stray drops in his black hair.

"Oh yes, I'm fairly sure I'm hopeless as a blacksmith." A short clearing of the throat alongside a laugh, as if to make certain it was working properly, a deadpan blow of air through narrowed lips at Laric's face, another silly chuckle.

A twig popped in the flame, ember sparks drifted up into the growing darkness.

... couldn't help but ask 'why'. It came with answers simple and at the tip of his tongue. Why join him, why the niceties, the slow undress, the closing distance?
Laric wouldn't tell him if he asked. Unspoken signals, means to an end.
'I yearn for complication.'
Yes, you do. Correct but for the last word. But aren't I the same?

Then, he excised some other thoughts, and turned them inward. There was a reason that he didn't get this close. Affection got equated with pain, love in continuity was punished, and so he'd come to dread a momentary touch and passing fondness just as well. And yet, he wasn't made of steel, and this attention wasn't too overt or insistent, or unwelcome. A momentary pleasure, surely... even if ways parted, after. How often did a fine looking man join him by the flames and be so courteous?

The pain was fresh. The part of him that hurt, still hurt and bled all over people he could grow to be fond of, as if in warning not to get any closer - with good results at that... Right now, was he falling into a trap of 'maybe just this once', to slake a thirst that didn't reach the reason?

He inhaled, slowly, eyes drifting closed, a brief delay as customary ten heartbeats to arrive to a decision have passed.

"Wrote it when I traveled all over," he murmured, leaning into the arm a brief moment after it shifted, accepting that loose embrace. He propped himself up on the right arm, pressing shoulder to shoulder. Face tilted to study the way that fire's golden glow flickered against the tender skin on the side of the Laric's throat, the way a bluish-grey shadow defined the jawline, scattered upward the temple and curved around the cheekbone.

The tone fell slow and conspiratorial, like footsteps on the sand. "Gathered songs and fables in every town I've rode, sailed and walked through, somewhat of a hobby of mine. Wrote some things of my own when mind craved movement. So many stories from different people, waiting to be reunited in different ways."

His posture shifted, thigh lightly brushed against thigh. Lips curved, a glimmer of mischief in the dark eyes that dropped from Laric's face and down the neck and chest.
"Could treat that wound of yours, steady hands, I've been told." The edges of his fangs teased against the lower lip in a smirk; his gaze flicked upward, pinned Laric down once more. "How would you like that?"

He could almost sense the slightest tension with his skin, like a scent so ephemeral it was more a witty guess.
He desired an equal, relished in the challenge that didn't come from feeling unworthy, the versatility and trust that came without a hard-set premise. The moment and the winner could dictate the mold, so long as certainty lay with the other.
But tension meant patience... little that he had it slipping with the spirits. Space. Watch how the handsome rogue would recollect himself, those daring eyes and delightfully wandering hands.
He could play the long game.
The night was theirs.

"A bit of this and a bit of that," Walter agreed. "Used to be all in a day's work. Did you get a chance to travel the world any, in this decade and a half?"

Back when they were young, he'd been the responsible one, bringing a satchel with medicines to fencing matches - small, insignificant, just in case. Simply started bringing it one day, something must have happened between the visits. Didn't need it, most of the days, the training swords resulting in a bruise or scrape but rarely anything serious. Walter brought it all the same, solemn in that quiet routine. Seemed like little changed in that regard.

He took the hand into his own, sitting up. The fingers with somewhat pronounced joints were hard, calloused by the sword and the many 'bits of this and that' taken up for leisure and upkeep over the many years. But beneath the callouses was a quiet, controlled power, even if right now it took an effort to exercise any sort of precision or logistics. The gloved hand - felt thin under the fabric, digits clearly defined and fingertips all too narrow with no sensation of a fingernail; yet, it functioned all the same.
"Wait, I think I have some clotting powders," the tiny vial with a rusty-looking powder he procured was smaller than a fingerbone. "There."

A quick squirt from waterskin over the wound to wash off blood smears, dust and dirt, then he dabbed it dry at the edges with a bandage, and, finally - put the hand against his knee palm up. Spread the fingers with his good hand to stretch the skin, but brought the wound edges closed as he could. Poured fine dust from the vial with the gloved hand. The blood that seeped did just that, sizzled, hissed and hardened. The gloved digit whispered a brush against the dark line on the treated palm, and Walter let go.

"Cured, though not healed, mind. I don't have much, but it should do better than poking more holes, right?" the man mused quietly. Glanced up. "You don't seem too fond of talking. Do I make you wary?"

He moved back a little. Gave space, in packing the remaining tools back into the pouch and tossing it back over the log. There was a question, an answer, 'what do you want most of all in this world?'
To be myself without looking over the shoulder.
Oh, he wanted so many things that felt impossible.
A smile tugged at the corner of his mouth.
"We aren't going to be more private and more true than here, middle of nowhere and middle of the night obscuring. Might try and make the best of it, who knows if there will be another."

Perhaps it was the wine talking - he'd snagged another bottle as he settled once again, still corked and promising a dry red this time - but he felt at ease even if it was a grudge. If he died as just Walter, not in an intrigue, not on a battlefield fighting for some Sovereign's appointee he did not believe in, not as a horror fighting other horrors at Shroud's demand... maybe, he'd be content with that. Not happy, but... maybe it was as good enough as he could get it.

Walter's face darkened, though he'd listen if Laric spoke, a quill-sharpening knife pulled from a boot stuck and tilting this way and that, loosening the cork.

A few things, indeed. A love for swordsmanship, a formerly debonair attitude, a present odd reputation.
Walter listened, carefully. Yes, his wants were as out in the open as they were ever going to be, and his defenses melted down into complacent yearning for his need to be met - for comfort, for care. But some part of his lethal clockwork of a mind still ticked away, pulling the beats already sunk in, into a complete picture.

Laric would rather drink than talk about himself, and seemed to lie, or joke, perhaps, when asked about the prior loves - in claiming that Walter himself had dealt a heartbreak. Not one Walter ever suspected, back in the day. Perhaps, they were both young to see it in one another - or, perhaps, because the golden-crowned fool never made so much as an implication that could tread over friendship into a flirt.

Perhaps, it was that Walter's youth marked recognition of proclivity when he faced a different blond, with stunning ocean eyes and half the body encased in metal. First lustful thoughts intertwined with shame. But, he was young and stupid. There have been loves since then, and people who'd claimed affection. One sort or another.

But Laric's claim of interest was beyond any doubt - it was rather telling, the way Laric looked at him. Only someone who'd thought of enjoying bedding or killing someone else had that sort of fire in their eyes.
The cogs turned, sluggishly, but surely.
Almost two decades later, they barely knew one another. Walter's cold, burdened demeanor outside this ring of light from fire and drink bringing out things he'd hide from the world. Laric's secretive attitude, covert manner, everything that wasn't said.

Whatever it was, that Laric claimed had possessed him since their youth - it could not have been love. Some carnal attraction, perhaps - Catspaw had that allure of a refined portrait image, down to the striking jawline and positively taunting curve of the lips. The rest of him in the folds of the open shirt - begged Walter's eyes to wander without yielding over every inch. Must have scored more than a few notches on his belt, this handsome liar, tempting to forget the bite of steel echoing under the clavicle in a half-faded scar, and let the blood rush hotter.

Sober, he had no such temptation to consider. Inebriation didn't rob him of reason, Walter thought - it robbed him of will.
Same will he had to exercise, again and again, to keep his place in the world, be it his life or his land or his sanity.
He was bloody lonely. He wanted the touch, wanted to be adored. Perhaps, he was himself merely in love with the feeling.
Perhaps, he did not appreciate the casual manner about the simpler trysts.

"Lettie knew what was coming," Walter murmured. But, fell quiet, listened to the end.
It was quite curious, how the confession of love was framed around the women they failed, he mused. From the sound of it, Laric's was haunting him, but to ask what happened there would be to interrupt the surreptitious revelation, break what fragile confidence alcohol and desire have established there.

And yet, he wondered, what it was like for the poor woman, to live with the ghost of Laric's image of him. He hoped she had been free, at least, to choose whatever love she wanted, past the matrimonial shackles. There was clearly affection and regret for that unnamed woman, so that she was even a bridge to Laric's desire of him, it sounded like. What if she wasn't supportive? What did that even mean, supportive, of something such as this?

He didn't want to be sober, and he was too sober for this, reason sharpening the dread.
Feeding the pure physicality would feel wrong. Hell, sober, he wasn't fond of being touched by strangers at all. Wouldn't flinch, but didn't like it. And yet...

The cork gave in, loosened and slid slowly out of the bottle neck.
He had to handle the confession gently, no doubt. Walter freed his knife, brushed it against the sand, and flipped it by the ring on index finger to the back of the hand, holding the bottle in the same one. Thought, for a moment.
"I don't enjoy people hurting themselves for my sake." Eyes wandered to Laric's face. Stayed there.

Walter left the bottle re-corked and sturdily planted, flipped and sheathed the karambit with a flourish, as if to demonstrate that his hands were empty when he leaned closer once again. Black glove sunk into the sand, fingers curling as if to bury and carry his weight better. His other hand, however, rose to touch Laric's face. Thumb brushed against a cheekbone, fingertips curled along the jawline. The pale fingers slipped lower, and gripped the other man under the chin, thumb and index fixing the head - don't look away. A slow advance of a predator, broad shoulders outlined in the ember aura of the firelight.
We don't know one another for anything past skin. Maybe we don't have to.

The violet eyes did not host the distant cold glimmers as they pierced into Laric's, the quiet, low tone wrapping the steel demand in soothing softness and shiver-evoking dips into honeyed lower bass.
"Burning for me, are you?" A question. A tease. Almost a different query, 'Why not pursue, then?' In the simple ways one man could express desire to court another, especially when rumors were this rampant... "Must have been excruciating, stoking the fire for all those years, and past year's half, with no notice of intention." The words dripped slowly, savoured as the grip did not relent, eyes like midnight shadows pinning into the handsome face opposite, slightly widening as the voice sunk to a whisper. "But, here I am, in the flesh." The dark lashes lowered, eyes falling half-lidded. "Is it everything you've wanted?" Almost a chuckle, breathless, edges of fangs teasing and sharp. Fingers in the grip relaxed. Thumb trekked against the stubble, brushed at the rim of Laric's lower lip. He tracked it with gaze wandering. What a nice curve on that mouth.

Geist snapped the jaws quietly, head drifting upward, ears and eyes affixed in search of something come too close for comfort to the campsite. The drake was smart enough to tell another night stalker from prey, but was in no rush to stand. The languid blanket of shadow settled through the forest, the starlit skies falling violet from peach, and then obsidian. New moons tonight, no rings to color between the stars at the turn of the seasons.
An owl called in the distance. Its flight would be almost silent, claws sharp as it snatched prey into the deadly grip.

Walter's fingers loosened at resistance, slipped along the temple and brushed a golden strand behind the ear. A pleasant shiver rolled down his nape and scattered in sparks down the spine, focus drifted when Laric's mouth found his wrist - a tender spot, perhaps. A study of soft spots and scars was commencing, only skin deep, only a night long. He knew that every word and gesture was paces of the dance that only aimed for momentary pleasures - he'd seen it before. He'd wanted it to last, before. It only led to ruin. He knew this wasn't affection, just a bit of heady warmth before the spark burnt out, and Laric moved to the next conquest - but wasn't he cold?
He had no obligations to deny himself but for his own damned wariness and wants that were far too much for far too many.

"Tonight is for revelry, I say," his whisper slithered along the blond's cheek. Fingers tangled in the long strands, tightened the hold on them slightly, and the warm, sweet liquor-tinted breath heat touched below the ear. A kiss under the jaw, at the spot of skin where pulse beat, caged in want. "Show me, then," His hand raked through the golden hair, unsteady but careful enough so that it would not snag. Fingertips traversed the scalp. The other hand found purchase against the log he'd been leaning on half the evening, looming now, shoulders rolling with the shifting weight.

He leaned closer, parted lips hovering over that soft curve of the mouth, brushing against it, but moving ever so slightly away with a chuckle, a tease before a kiss, short and almost cruel, daring. "Show me how you burn for me, Laric."
