Una Ostraine

Age  22
Gender  Femme
Origin  Whiteport
Occupation  Seamstress, Tailor, Textile Merchant

“Have you been to her studio off the high street? Kelp Garden? It hasn’t been open long, and I hear it won’t be for much longer. She sold out of everything so quickly that the ladies were squabbling over the toiles like hens in a coop!"

"Altalusian Fashion is evolving and that bright little debut is at the forefront. May we soon be graced with a financier from Crown’s Hold discovering her bold shapes and vibrant motifs. Her ruching is so exquisite, it'll make your nan’s wrinkles vanish in comparison."

"A gaudy twit. She’s desperately trying to turn peasant dress into something fashionable, but there’s nothing there to elevate. Real elegance lies with Suldaza and she clearly hasn’t a clue what to do with cactus silk."

Her arrival was a gentle gift from an outgoing tide. Her mother’s loving embrace was replaced by the kiss of salt water, and her cradle became tangled driftwood and yellow seafoam. The textile merchant’s wife who scooped her from the surf theorized her to be a lucky wreck survivor. Or cargo purposely jettisoned. Either way, Una was divine intervention for a hume couple who couldn’t conceive.

Thus, Una’s life was moulded by her adoptive parents’ routines. Her father, until his death, was a wealthy trader roaming the western sphere, hawking cloth of gold, silk damasks, and velvet. Her mother, the coastal town’s seamstress and laundress, passed away as well, leaving a void Una was destined to fill. Having been studious under both her parents’ tutelage, she was well suited to do so.

For all circumstances, the Sculptor and the Smith seemed to conspire in setting Una up for success. She had access to valuable connections, materials, and skill. She was dedicated to evolving into her most refined self and embraced constructive criticism as a tool for growth. However, her relentless pursuit of perfection stems from a deep need for external validation, and she struggles to let her work speak for itself.

Appearance

Height  5'3
Build  Petite
Hair  Fins and tentacles
Eyes  Iridescent

Una exudes an allure that’s both captivating and untouchable, like how a rare, exotic creature makes you want to touch it, and be near it, yet can never keep it as a pet. That allure is undeniable, depending on one's definition of beauty. Her face is rounded and coquettish, best suited to broody deadpans and demure pouts. There are pools of tidewater stillness in her eyes, the same opaline hue flowing across the rounded swell of her bottom lip. Every piscine feature pays homage to the boiling sea, tucked beneath a cresting wave of bulbous brow.

Especially the rest of her head, with it's mantle of adipose tissue and two soft, antennae-like fins. Gestures flow as naturally from them as they do from the circle of webbed tentacles that curl around her shoulders like a sleek bob, versatile in their breadth of wear. Most commonly she wears them pinned back with an outrageous coral-and-taffeta fascinator, tucked up under a beehive of sea sponge, or bejewelled and draped gracefully along her collarbone.

Like any tailor worth their tape, she harbours disdain for anything that fails to fit or drape her person at the perfect angle, embodying minimalist style while remaining ahead of her time. From neck to navel, she is often cloaked in a bodice with a plunging neckline, slipped into a funereal lace gown, or buttoned into impeccably tailored blouses paired with matching hose. She designs and creates most of her garments by hand but also embraces pieces from other designers, her eye attuned to emerging trends and fading styles.

Personality

  • Rogue spirited, radical hearted
  • Creative and collaborative
  • Nurturing and encouraging
  • Silver-spoon fed, yet seldom haughty
  • Focused but fearful of failure
  • Delicate but hardworking

Skills

Una grasps and appreciates the role of style as a medium for expressing identity to the wider world. Magic, however, eludes her. Not impossible, but unfamiliar and glaringly amateur against her seasoned skill-set. She has aspirations to weave fragments of shroud into her work to make her pieces sing with otherworldly energy.

She appraises, barters, measures, weighs, and assigns each textile with purpose. Sewing, tailoring and embroidery are second nature. She is still learning the intricacies of loom-work and currently prefers to source fabrics rather than weave them herself.
