The Deadlands were a quiet and barren place. Nearly totally drained of Shroud, almost nothing could survive there for any substantial amount of time. The fresh water from Dragon’s Teeth turned sickly as it made it’s way through. The surrounding area rapidly sucking away whatever Shroud it brought with it. The reason for the absence of The Shroud was none other than the city of Cindersend. Although it began as a city of Elven exiles, it had swollen into a den of vices and pleasures that had become home to all the peoples of Khurun. The city took every whisp of Shroud that the world managed to send its way and devoured it non stop.

It was for this very reason that a great beast of a cat was currently running through the Deadlands just outside of Cindersend. Due to the cloudy evening blocking out the light of the stars the deep and steady ’Thu-thu thu-thu thu-thu’ of it’s paws on the sand was the only proof of it’s existence, and a testament to it’s immense size. If one were to look out from the city at just the right moment, they might catch a glimpse of a black blur occasionally cresting the dunes.

Taresh was pissed. He had forgotten how miserable the Deadlands were and this trip had reminded him full force. Combine that with the less rational state of his primordial form, and he was livid. It was normal for him to travel great distances in this form because of how much faster it was, and because the hunger that you might expect a great beast to have was often sedated by the energy of the Shroud. Except there was NO Shroud in this forsaken hell hole. He had been stuck in this form for days now, worried that if he shifted to his mortal form he would not be able to shift back due to the lack of ambient Shroud. Oh, and he was HUNGRY.

Also, he was so tired of tasting the leather of his travel bag that had been dangling from his mouth for the entire trip. He couldn’t just run around without money, or clothes, but mostly money. He had found that people didn’t like to feed him if he didn’t pay. And towns would be more than happy to send hunting parties after him if he stole cattle.

But hope had appeared on the horizon, in the form of the dull glow of a city that never slept. The great black cat seemed to obtain a burst of energy as it barreled for the city entrance. Stopping a few dunes away, the cat let the leather bag fall from its foaming maw as it sat and panted. Once its breathing had returned to normal it began to change. It’s great mass seemed to fold in on itself, and suddenly it was gone. In it’s place stood a hulking grey figure, it’s six and half foot body rippling with bulging sinuous muscles. Grey horns sprouted from the figures large brow, curving up and back over its long black hair. Yellow feline eyes glinted in the soft glow from the city that barely managed to reach them. The figure smiled, revealing a predator’s teeth. When it finally moved, it stretched its long clawed arms up over it’s head and let out a deep breath.

“Oooh that feels gooood.”
Taresh groaned as he felt his muscles stretching. Once he was done, he quickly pulled his black rough-spun garments from the leather bag and put them on. After putting on some dark leather boots, he pulled a matching black cloak over his body, hood up, and put the pack over his shoulder. He left his Warhammer tied to the bottom of the bag, no need to look any more dangerous than he already did. He had found that city guards got pretty nervous when he showed up.

Grumbling about the sand that he felt in his boots, Taresh crested the last dune and found what passed as a road leading to the city gates.

As it turns out, getting inside was much easier than he expected. He had explained that he was working for The Kyvoli’s, a traveling troupe of performers that wanted him to see if they should add the city to their list of stops. Of course, the guards didn’t care in the least bit for why he was there, he paid the ‘toll’, which he was certain didn’t exist and was just them shaking down someone who didn’t know any better, and found himself entering the city.

Despite the smile on his face, Taresh was burning with hunger, and being in the Shroud deprived city always made him feel miserable. Without much thought he walked along the main thoroughfare until he saw a sign with a picture of a plate and a mug on it. He didn’t even read the name of the establishment before he walked in and found a seat in the corner. He saw people watching him, but that was normal, his hulking form had always drawn interest…and fear.

"Beer and three plates of the evening’s meal please.”
He said with a toothy grin when the barmaid finally approached. As she walked off he sat back and finally let some tension leave his body. First things first, he would eat, probably sleep, and then gather information as quickly as possible before getting out of this hell hole.

The diminutive half-goblin was bored.

The pleasures of one of the Golden Houses were the same day in and day out. Beautiful people indulging in all kinds of vices. The perfumes, silken fabrics, and the light-laughter that only covered up the darkness underneath. Normally, that was where she could be found, but Sae needed something different tonight so she'd vacated the Lotus. Dyvir was busy planning their next venture, so she'd been left in limbo. Everything was ready from her end, of course, the little woman took her task seriously. Partly out of loyalty, but also a healthy amount of caution. While the Captain was dependable and about as calm as the shifting sands, his siblings, the ones that held the true power of the D’Acard family, well Sae knew better than to cross them.

Even still, skipping out of the pleasure house for an evening would probably go unnoticed. Sae had wandered the city streets, only having the break the fingers on one pickpocket who made the mistake of thinking her an easy mark. Her aimless path stopped in front of a building with a plate and a mug on the sign as a pleasant smell filled the air near the building. The green-skinned half-goblin turned into the door following the smell as her stomach growled.

The room was busy and she searched for an open seat as the barmaid moved about the room. The Pewter Mug held a more casual, rowdy atmosphere than the Lotus and Sae welcomed the difference. "Hey! Watch where you're stepping long shanks!" She shouted out as someone nearly backed into her. The person leapt forward apologizing, but she was already moving through the crowded tables and chairs.

Noticing a largely empty table in the back she headed in that direction, only to find herself faced with quite a large Deva. No wonder the table was empty. "Mind if I join ye. The Mug is very full tonight." The half-goblin pulled herself up onto the chair, sitting on her knees to see comfortably over the table.

The noise of the crowd was a refreshing change from the vast empty desert. It seemed to be a busy evening for the establishment and the few barmaids could be seen hustling back and forth with hands full of ale. Taresh continued to relax as he observed the Pub from his table. It was relaxing to be able to observe people while have a wall at his back. No need to think too hard about what might be coming up behind him. His attention was peaked when he heard the sound of shouting through the noise of the crowd. The shouting itself wasn’t necessarily strange or unexpected, but more interesting was the direction of the shouting. Unless his ears deceived him, it seemed to be coming from….down? He turned his head just in time to see a goblin…no, a half-goblin. She emerged from the crowded middle section of the bar and scanned the tables along the wall before settling on Taresh.

Taresh smiled and nodded his head to the chair across from his when she asked to join him. The girl, no woman, pulled herself into the chair and appeared to sit on her knees based on how high her head managed to get over the table.

Being the civilized person that he was, Taresh reached up and pulled his hood form his head. He knew Devahni were not uncommon, and plenty of the Animal Folk had horns as well, but it still attracted extra attention that he usually sought to avoid.

“It does seem to be rather full. Is there something going on in the city, or just a lucky evening for business?” He posed the question right as the barmaid arrived with his mug of ale and three plates of food. The meal consisted of a small loaf of bread, half a roast chicken, and a few roast potatoes. Nothing special, but he was pleasantly surprised by the chicken.

“Thank you, and an ale for my guest as well if she wants.” He said to the barmaid, nodding his head toward the half-goblin across from him.

The half-goblin took in her new companion as he lowered his hood. Horns jutting up through his hair. Too tall to be a Beastkin, more than likely a Deva. Sae tilted her head to the side in consideration of his question. "The Mug is normally a popular place. Has some of the best food for the price this side of the city, but tonight seems busier than normal." She added in the end as she glanced around the room with her pink toned eyes. The tables were nearly full already and patrons were still coming in through the doorway. "Sometimes they have entertainment, but I'm not entirely sure."

"Thank ye." She said nodding her thanks to the Deva. "I'm Sae." She said standing on the chair to be able to reach her hand over to offer it to the Deva. He'd been so gracious to offer a drink and a seat that it only seemed fair to introduce herself. She returned to her knees after, reaching into a pouch at her side she began to pull out the tools to roll a smoke when she looked up. "Do you mind if I enjoy a bit of the leaf?" It was only proper to be polite, she wasn't at the Lotus after all.

Taresh considered her words as he too glanced around the establishment. “Well I’m glad I stumbled upon a place with good food, maybe with enough luck we will get that entertainment too.” He laughed once, a booming laugh, and was just beginning to evaluate the plates before him when the half-goblin introduced herself.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you Sae, I’m Taresh.” He reached out and shook her hand, which appeared as a child’s in his own. Her next question brought a wide smile to his face. “Do I mind?” Another booming laugh. “Give me a minute to replenish myself with these plates and I’ll join you!” He slipped his hand into his pack and pulled out a wooden pipe and a small leather fold holding tobacco. Setting the implement on the table, he turned his attention back to the plates of food before him.

With the gusto of someone who hadn’t had a proper meal in many days, he began tearing into the first plate. “So, what brings you to The Mug on this fine evening?” He inquired, after inhaling the plate of food in a handful of bites. “Do they have rooms here, or is there a better place you recommend for a traveler?”

Sae couldn't help but glance over at the food that had been placed down in front of the Deva. It was a lot. He was a large man, but even that amount of food seemed excessive. Yet, excess was a part of life here in Cindersend, at least if you could afford it. So it wasn't her place to judge, except perhaps to marvel if he managed to finish it all.

The little green woman began the business of rolling the leaf together in paper, making sure it was tight and wouldn't spill. Licking the paper to close it before leaning forward to pull the candle forward enough to light the blunt between her fingers. The spicy, magicked leaf singing in her veins and leaving her with that warm feeling that she enjoyed from this particular strain.

"Just needed a change of scenery for the evening." She said honestly as she leaned back in the chair and pulled a drag on the roll between her lips. "I believe the Mug has some simple rooms. If you're looking to find something a bit finer. There's always the pleasure houses." Pleasure house was a bit of a strange term when it came to Cindersend. It certainly could mean exactly what everyone assumed complete with paid company, but Sae had always felt that here, pleasure could come in many forms. A bed of silken sheets and a warm bath could be as fine as an elegant meal or warm companionship when it was hard enough to survive out on the Deadlands.

Taresh sat the first plate to the side, a few chicken bones, already cracked and cleaned of marrow, all that was left remaining. He drank deeply from the mug of ale, light brown in color, as he slid the second plate in front of him. The drink was acceptable, clearly a bold and flavorful brew that had been diluted with water to help to stretch the supply. Nothing that Taresh didn’t expect from all but the finest of establishments, the kind that he had never had the spare coin to visit.

Polishing off the mug, he held it up until one of the workers saw it and nodded to him, letting him know they would be by with another soon. He watched Sae roll her blunt with practiced ease as he began on his second plate, a little slower now that his stomach wasn’t trying to eat itself from hunger. The sweet smell of her smoke tickled his nostrils as he listened to her speak.

“Simple is fine enough by me.” His said between bites of food. One of the bar maids dropped off his refill and the drink he had ordered for Sae. The sound of groaning and cheering could be heard from across the pub where a few betting games were being played. The boisterous noise of the establishment constantly rose and fell as conversations began and ended. Although his ears were a tad sensitive, Taresh was enjoying the sounds of life, after traveling alone for so long. Maybe, if he was lucky, there would be a few brawls in the streets once the the rowdy ones in the crowd got deep into their cups.

Taresh finished his second plate and slid it into the first.“Change of scenery is good. Are you originally from Cindersend, or have you resided here long? I’m actually here for on a bit of a business trip, I guess you could say. Mostly trying to gather some information for the rest of my clan, see if swinging through the city on our next caravan would be worth the effort to get all the way out here.” He paused to take a deep drink from his fresh mug.“We’re a traveling troupe of performers, nothing too flashy. We haven’t made our way down here in the past however, mostly sticking to the North of Suldaza. We have heard stories about the Pleasure Houses and other establishments in town and thought this kind of city just might enjoy our show.”He let out a deep sigh then continued.“I just didn’t know I was gonna be the sap they elected to run my sorry rear all the way down here though.”Feeling as if he might have over-shared to his guest, Taresh decided to quit talking and begin working his way through the third plate.

She leaned back in the chair, missing her stool at the Lotus that was just a bit higher than the rest. Sae nodded her thanks to the barmaid and Taresh as the mug was placed in front of her. The smell of the food from the plates on the table was making her stomach rumble. The next opportunity she had, she ordered a meal for herself.

"Born in Cindersend." Sae says with a nod. "What kind of show do you and your troop have?" While she wasn't really in charge of anything at the Lotus, that didn't mean she couldn't put in a good word with the D’Acard siblings to get them a trial or something in the case they did something that might fit the pleasure house's style.

A plate was put down before her and Sae felt a minor frustration, it would be hard to eat as low as she was in the seat. "Do you have a raiser that I might sit on?" She asked as she caught the sleeve of the barmaid before she could leave. The woman disappeared for a moment before returning with a wooden block to sit on the chair. The half-goblin woman gave her thanks, now able to sit more comfortably at the table. Fingers digging into the half chicken on her plate. Sae hissed at the heat, managing to pull it apart a bit. She sucked at her slightly scalded fingers as she waited for the meat to cool.

"If you ran here, how long were you out on the sands?" She asked returning to their previous conversation. Cindersend wasn't exactly near anything. Especially since the previous generations had sucked the land nearly dry of the shroud. The desert already was a harsh place to be caught in, but the deserts around the city were the worst unless one was prepared.

Taresh savored the salty roasted flavor of the chicken as he watched the half-goblin order a plate of food for herself. He swallowed and licked his lips before answering her question. “Mostly acrobatics of all sorts, high fliers, silks, trapeze, and tumbling. We have some musicians and dancers as well. If there are children about we also do storytelling and some illusions.” He shrugged as he picked up some more chicken. “Nothing too wild, but we can cater towards the wants of the cities.”

Watching the woman, Taresh was surprised to see her ask for a raiser to sit on. She didn’t seem to be embarrassed by her height, or her need to get help in order to eat her food conveniently. He was impressed by her confidence, or lack of pride maybe? He wasn’t sure what it was, but it was refreshing. He finished off his final roasted chicken and began munching on the lump of bread that remained. It was warm, if a bit dry. He supposed it had been quite delicious when it was fresh.

“On the sands? Ehh a couple of days at least.” His forehead wrinkled as he pinched his eyebrows together in thought. “Not something I would recommend for anyone! The desert here is a brutal place.” Popping the final bite of bread into his mouth, Taresh shrugged. “Had to be done though, and I’m probably the most suited for the trip out of the whole troupe.” Swallowing the bite, He stacked the final plate with the others and sighed contentedly. “That was quite refreshing.”

Having gotten his ravenous hunger taken care of, Taresh began packing the bowl of his pipe with some tobacco and in moments he was puffing thick clouds of white smoke up towards the ceiling of the pub. “Any important information I should have about the city before I start wandering around? Anywhere I can look for odd jobs if I run out of money while I’m here?”

The green-skinned woman tore off a piece of bread before using it to pull chicken from the bone. A simple way to protect her fingers as she ate and the bread soaked up any of the dripping juices. She ate in small bites, almost delicate if she hadn't been using her fingers.

The trope seemed like it would be a good fit to run some shows from the Lotus, especially.the bards, dancers, and acrobats. There would likely be a trial period before they would be offered something substantial. The elven owners were very particular about those that staffed the pleasure house. Everything had to be perfect. They certainly already employed a few regular entertainers, but some.variety would be welcome among the clientele.

"That's a long time to be out there on your own. The deadlands are not know to be kind to travelers." He was lucky that he made it and didn't become another set of bleached bones on the sands. "The family I work for, owns one of the premier pleasure houses in the city. They will hire various entertainers, bards, acrobats, dancers and the like for specials shows. If you're interested just ask for The Drifting Lotus. I can introduce you to the owners of the house."

In this city connections were nearly as important as the coin one carried, or as precious as water. Without the right connections, one could find themselves dead in an alley before the night was up. Still could happen if one wasn't careful, but under the protect of one of the powerful names, well it made life easier. While the D'Acard siblings weren't at the top, their name had enough pull, enough clout, that no one bad batted an eye when they cleared out the old owners of the Lotus.

"Advice. Always watch your back. Cindersend is about as friendly as the deadlands. We'll just smile to your face while robbing you blind." Sae quirked her lip up, one of her fangs showing over her lip in the process. "People here respect strength as much as name. So don't be surprised if you see duels happening in the street. Water is as precious as gold and sometimes even more expensive. So ration what you have carefully otherwise you'll get fleeced during the dry hours." A good start to advice for a newcomer to the city. At least the key things, she could think of for now.

Taresh let his mouth fill with warm smoke from his pipe as the woman spoke. The bold spicy flavor coated his tongue and filled his nostrils as he slowly let the smoke spill from his mouth. It seemed that his guest just happened to have some connections that might help him set something up for the troupe.

Typically they would travel around as set up a temporary show on the outskirts of a town they would stay until business floundered, usually anywhere from a few days to a few weeks depending on the size of the place, then they would move on. Scheduling something a little more long-term, like a show at a well established business, would be a welcome change to their normal life-style. As long as Taresh could keep the other performers out of trouble in this town.

“An introduction would be greatly appreciated. It would be nice to have the chance to work in one place for a while. What kind of work do you do there?” She had called it a pleasure house, but he knew there were often times many different types of pleasures to be found at those places, not just the carnal.

He nodded along and continued to puff his pipe as she offered him some advice. He wasn’t terribly upset by what she said. At the very least, if it was a place that respected physical strength then he could at least handle himself in that regard. He would have to keep his guard up, the others had often told him that he was too friendly and trusting of strangers, he would need to try to temper those things while in this town it would seem.

“And what of fun? What does Sae do for entertainment in this town?” A wide smile filled his grey face, revealing his sharp teeth.

"Not much of anything really. The owners, the D’Acard siblings, run the Drifting Lotus. My connection comes in the form of their younger brother, Dyvir D’Acard. I work for him as Quartermaster of his airship." She answered leaving off the part where they were as good as pirates. "I suppose I might work as a protector there when not off on the airship, but that's more so that I don't over stay my welcome from the twins."

What was important about the D'Acard siblings is that if they could save some effort by having someone else do the lion's share of the work then they were much more inclined one way or another. "You just need to make sure you have a good trial act that you'd like to show them or even maybe a variety. Customers demands can vary on the day. Sometimes they want comedic acts, while others more sensual, and others soothing. The Lotus likes to cater to all kinds."

Fun. Now that was a question. One that took a few moments of thought. What was fun when one just always was focused on survival? Sae pushed aside the plate now that she had finished, taking a moment to roll up another paper filled with leaf. Lighting in and pulling a draw on the glowing stick. "Fun takes on a bit of a different look here I think, but personally. I tend to relax at the Lotus, enjoying a nice strong drink, my shroud infused weed, and occasionally tossing out some rowdy citizen that is disturbing the patrons." The final part was particularly fun as they often didn't expect such strength in such a small form. Granted the blood magic helped, but she had to make them bleed first.

"What does a traveling entertainer like to do as fun?" She asked back now curious. What did fun look like outside of the sands of the deadlands and those tied to Cindersend in one way or another.

“Airship Quartermaster? That sounds like a position with ample opportunity for excitement. Has that work allowed you to see very much of the world, or do your routes keep you close to the city here?” He asked as he remembered the few times he had had the opportunity to ride an airship. During the time between mercenary work and establishing their role as traveling entertainers, Taresh and a few of the others had ran a few jobs working as guards for a shipping company. It wasn’t much but it had kept them fed for a short while. If he stayed around the city for too long he might find himself once again in need of supplemental income. If that became true perhaps he could ask Sae for work.

Taresh nodded along as she explained the situation with the D’Acard sibling, the ones who owned the establishment known as The Drifting Lotus. What she said was pretty much in line with what he would expect from an establishment that was focused on entertaining a wide variety of guests. “I suppose I will have to do my best to provide an example of our abilities. It might have been a good idea to bring a few others along with me for that purpose.” He used a small metal tool to tamp his tobacco as he puffed, a small cloud forming above his head before being pulled apart by the movement of the air.

“Sounds like we might have some things in common!” He laughed and smacked the table once with his large clawed hand. “Strong drink, strong smoke, and a little test of strength.” A wide grin split his face as he looked down at the half-goblin. “Other than that, I enjoy chatting with strangers, hearing as much about their life as they’re willing to share with me. A game of cards, or dice, or a fair bit of fishing if there is a good spot. I don’t expect to find that here though.” He said that last part with a sigh. Even now he could feel how dry and dead the shroud felt in this city. Although it caused no physical distress, he felt it in a spiritual sense, like every breath he took lacked something intrinsically crucial to life itself.

“Is weaving a common occurrence in a place like this? I imagine some form of blood magic must be necessary, that or shroudstones.” He took another puff on his pipe, the slow of the embers lighting up his dark face.
