Born in Crown Hold's poorest quarter, Xenovia had to fight from the moment she drew her first breath. Unwanted by her parents, but loved all the same, hers was a difficult start to a life otherwise teeming with potential and promise. Cold and hungry most nights, she nevertheless grew to become quite the intimidating figure: glowing amber eyes, curved horns, skin the colour of dusk.
Though she attended a school in the lower city, she learned little. Delinquency was her favoured pastime, if her brushes with the law were anything to go by. Her parents' scoldings did little to dissuade the young Devahni from going out and causing trouble with her friends. Suffice to say, pockets got picked, goods got lifted, and the local gangs watched it all happen with piquing interest, much to her father's growing anger.
Tempers flared when "representatives" showed up at her tenement block with gifts and honeyed words. Young as she was, even she could see the knife hidden behind their smiles, knew from experience just what association would cost her.
They went easy at first. When persuasion didn't work, they tried coercion; when coercion failed them, they resorted to making threats. [TBC]
